The Ministry of Civil Affairs on Tuesday urged shelters nationwide to work around the clock and give more aid to homeless people in order to prevent deaths caused by exposure to severely cold temperatures.
The ministry said in a statement that local shelter management authorities should provide 24-hour services to those in need.
Relevant departments should keep an eye on public places like transport hubs, culverts, parks and abandoned houses, where homeless people often stay, in order to help the homeless make it through the winter, the statement said.
The statement came in the wake of two recent tragedies in central China's Henan province in which a migrant worker and a homeless person, respectively, were found dead under an overpass after a snowfall.
Much of north China has experienced extremely cold temperatures in recent days. Temperatures hit minus 15 degrees Celsius in Beijing on Sunday. Endi
