Reconstruction of the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province will be completed within the year, a local official announced Sunday.

Wang Yong, deputy head of the prefecture, made the announcement at a press conference held on the third anniversary of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the area three years ago.

Wang said 1,248 reconstruction projects had been launched by the end of March, providing a solid base for completing reconstruction.

By the end of June, housing and urban support facilities will be completed, according to Wang, adding that Gyegu Township, an important trade hub and one of the worst-hit areas, will be back to normal by the end of September.

All local residents are expected to move into new homes within the year, Wang said at the press conference.

The construction of transportation and energy projects will be accelerated to provide better infrastructure support for the region's future development, Wang said, adding that schools and hospitals will also be completed in a timely manner.

The local government will also finish repairing 87 monasteries that were damaged by the quake, he said.
