"Despicable Me 2" remains atop Chinese box office charts

"Despicable Me 2" remained top of China's box office charts in the week ending Jan. 19, reaping 114 million yuan (18.67 million U.S. dollars), according to Tuesday's China Film News.

The 3-D cartoon, featuring voices from Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig and Miranda Cosgrove, has grossed 211 million yuan since its debut on the Chinese mainland on Jan. 10.

It is a sequel to Universal's iconic animated comedy "Despicable Me".

Bonnie Bears, a Chinese animated cartoon which revolves around lumberjack Vick's attempts to fell timber and the bears' attempts to stop them, was second in the charts, took in 102 million yuan since its release on Jan. 17.

"Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," an American action thriller film directed by and co-starring Kenneth Branagh and featuring the Tom Clancy character Jack Ryan, was the third, raking in 60.5 million yuan in the week.

The film is dedicated to Tom Clancy, who died on Oct. 1, 2013.

The sixth installment of Chinese popular cartoon series "Xiyangyang and Huitailang," or "Pleasant Goat and Grey Wolf", was fourth, taking in 47 million yuan in the week.

The futuristic "Ender's Game," based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Orson Scott Card, was the fifth in the charts, taking in 110 million yuan since its release on Jan. 7.

In the week from Jan. 13 to Jan. 19, some 13.64 million people visited cinemas nationwide, up 54 percent year on year, while the weekly box office earnings saw a 56-percent jump with a total of 463 million yuan. Endi
