Chen Shu, a journalist with more than a decade of reporting experience on China's financial industry and economic reforms, was named a 2014 Yale World Fellow on Monday.
From South China Morning Post (SCMP), Hong Kong's English language newspaper, Chen joins 15 other World Fellows selected this year from more than 4,000 applicants. Thirteen previous fellows have hailed from China since the program's inception in 2002, as part of Yale's internationalization efforts.
"Through the fellowship, Yale will provide global leaders like Chen with the valuable opportunity to take a step back from the intensity of their work and to develop a strategic vision for their personal and professional trajectories and continued impact on the world," said Yale World Fellows Director Michael Cappello, professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine.
Chen is currently the financial editor and Mr. Shangkong Columnist at the SCMP. He joined the newspaper in 2012. In his current role, he leads a team of specialist reporters and edits the banking page for the SCMP.
"It is a privilege to welcome these impressive leaders to campus," said Yale President Peter Salovey. "Each year, World Fellows enrich the educational experience of Yale students through their participation in classes, presentations on campus, and individual mentoring."
Yale World Fellows is the university's signature global leadership development program. Each year since 2002, Yale has invited a group of accomplished mid-career professionals from a wide range of fields and countries for an intensive four-month period of academic enrichment and leadership training.
