Four people were trapped underground after a coal mine fire around noon Friday in northwest China's Shaanxi Province and rescue is under way on Saturday, local authorities said.

The fire happened at about 11:30 Friday in the shaft of a colliery run by Xinhe Coal Mining Company in Chengcheng County when 10 workers were doing some repair work underground, the county government's information office said in a statement.

Six workers returned to the ground safely and rescuers are trying to reach the trapped workers.

According to Pang Jianwen, deputy head of Chengcheng County's coal management bureau, the tunnel in the coal mine might be collapsed after the fire, but the trapped workers are very likely to be rescued.

Xinhe Coal Mining Company, with an annual production capacity of 300,000 tonnes, has been under rectification and maintenance. Endi
