Japanese 3D animated film "Stand by Me Doraemon" reaped 240 million yuan (about 39.2 million U.S. dollars) to top China's box office charts in the week ending May 31.
The popular film, which opened in Chinese theaters on May 28, centers on the friendship between futuristic cat robot Doraemon and Japanese boy Nobita.
Superhero sequel "Avengers: Age of Ultron" came in at a respectable second place, earning 106 million yuan in ticket sales in the week. The total box office earnings for the action-fantasy based on the Marvel comics characters of the same name stood at 1.4 billion yuan on May 31 after opening on May 12.
Third place went to action-fantasy "Tomorrowland," which grossed 88 million yuan in the week after opening on May 26, China Film News reported on Wednesday.
Indian fantasy-comedy "PK" came in fourth, pulling in 42.9 million yuan in the week. Its total ticket sales have hit 74.9 million yuan since its release on May 22.
Rounding out the top five was science fiction film "I, Frankenstein," which earned 40 million yuan after opening on May 26. Endi
