BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

CHINESE RESEARCH VESSEL

Chinese research vessel KEXUE, or Science, has completed the second portion of its investigation in the western Pacific Ocean and returned to its home port in the eastern city of Qingdao.

The ship covered more than 9,000 nautical miles during its 55-day voyage, carrying 78 scientists from seven research institutes and universities. Researchers have completed observations at more than 170 stations, obtaining a large number of deep-sea samples and observation data.

ANTARCTIC SEA ICE

The extent of sea ice in the Antarctic hit a record low in February, the second such event within five years. A new Chinese study, published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, revealed that on Feb. 25, a few days from the end of the Southern hemisphere's summer, the extent of Antarctic sea ice dipped below 2 million square km for the first time since the launch of satellite observations of the poles in 1978.

Antarctic sea ice has been enjoying a trend of modest increase of about 1 percent per decade since the late 1970s, although the extent of sea ice in the Arctic is undergoing a rapid decline as a result of global warming.

LESS CALORIE INTAKE TO LOSE WEIGHT

Chinese scientists offered new advice to those seeking to lose weight: You do not have to spare your supper, just reduce your daily calorie intake.

The study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that among patients with obesity, a regimen of time-restricted eating was not more beneficial in bodyweight reduction than daily calorie restriction.

Now, time-restricted eating like intermittent fasting is one of the popular approaches for weight loss, but its long-term efficacy is still not clear. Enditem
