BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.
WEATHER STATION
Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China's meteorological authorities have built a new meteorological station at an altitude of 5,200 meters in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The station, which is the highest altitude meteorological station in the middle section of the Kunlun Mountains, can perform automatic data transmission based on the BeiDou satellites. Its successful launch is expected to fill the gap in meteorological observation data in the area.
BABY PANDA
A female giant panda cub weighing 270.4 grams became the world's heaviest captive panda newborn ever registered, a panda research center in southwest China's Sichuan Province said on Wednesday.
Cuicui, a 16-year-old panda, gave birth to the cub at the Wolong Shenshuping panda base at 9:39 p.m. on Aug. 5, breaking the previous birth weight record of 249 grams held by a panda born in 2021, according to the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda.
CAVE BIODIVERSITY
Chinese researchers have revealed the law of biotic colonization of cave organisms in subtropical East Asia.
Through the analysis of phylogenetic, differentiation time and biogeography on 28 plants, animals and fungi in East Asian subtropical caves, they discovered that 88 percent of cave colonization events occurred after the Oligocene-Miocene boundary, and organisms from the surrounding forest were a major source for subtropical East Asian cave biodiversity.
