BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China:

ACADEMICIAN CANDIDATES LIST

China's top academic institutions released the list of candidates for selection as new academicians, the highest academic honorary title in the country's science and technology fields.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has 583 candidates for the title, while the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) has 655.

The selection program, which started on May 31, will this year add 79 and no more than 90 new academicians to the registry for CAS and CAE, respectively.

GLOBAL DRYLAND EXPANSION

Scientists have predicted a great reduction in terrestrial water storage in the next 70 years, accompanied by an expansion of global drylands up to about 10 percent, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The water storage reduction is dominated by precipitation and evapotranspiration variability, and could reach 41 to 84 percent by 2100, according to the findings of the latest study published in the journal npj Climate and Atmospheric Science.

"MAD" FORMATION

An international team led by Chinese scientists researching black holes has reported the first direct observational evidence of a "MAD" (magnetically arrested disk).

Black holes are extremely compressed cosmic objects predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity. They have a gravitational pull that is so intense that nothing -- not even light -- can escape it once inside a certain region called the event horizon.

An accretion disk forms when ample amounts of gas are trapped by a black hole. The first time the accretion disk of a black hole was observed was in 2019, at the center of massive galaxy M87. Enditem
