BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.
HOMO SAPIENS
Led by Chinese scientists, an international research team's recent study of a site in north China's Shanxi Province has unveiled fresh insights into the characteristics of Homo sapiens dating back 45,000 years.
The research on the origin, evolution and diffusion of Homo sapiens has long been a popular topic in the field of paleoanthropology.
Located on the southwest margin of Nihewan Basin, the Shiyu Site in Shanxi's Shuozhou City was discovered in 1963.
The deposits found at the site indicate that the Shiyu Homo sapiens lived on flat terraces beside rivers, with grassland as the main vegetation.
UNCONVENTIONAL WATER
China aims to utilize more than 18 billion cubic meters of unconventional water this year, as part of its efforts to conserve water, according to the Ministry of Water Resources.
China also strives to improve the recycled water utilization rate within water-scarce cities at the prefecture level and above to over 24 percent this year, the ministry said.
Unconventional water sources such as recycled water are an important supplement to conventional water resources.
NEW ENERGY CAR SALES
The sales of new energy passenger cars in China accounted for nearly two-thirds of the world's total last year, industrial data showed.
Some 8.87 million units of such vehicles were sold in the Chinese market in 2023, up 37 percent from a year ago and making up 63.5 percent of the global sales.
The penetration rate of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China, or the proportion of NEVs in all car sales, rose to almost 30 percent in 2023. Enditem
