GUIYANG, July 13 (Xinhua) -- On the campus of Longtan Primary School in southwest China's Guizhou Province, a group of 46 students and teachers from Hong Kong played "bamboo ball," a Chinese ethnic sports activity, with local friends.

Hong Kong student Carson Chen received cheers from the crowd after turning and leaping to throw the ball into the basket.

Bamboo ball is made of bamboo strips and shaped like an egg, and is popular among the Gelao ethnic group, integrating the skills of football, basketball and rugby. For the local people, playing bamboo ball is not only a competition, but also a kind of celebration.

"The activity requires adaptability and team cooperation. The whole process is very interesting," Chen said.

The visit of Hong Kong teachers and students is one of the main activities of their cultural study in Guizhou. Longtan Village, where the primary school is located, has a history of more than 700 years.

Shen Wenbin, a fifth grade student at Longtan Primary School, introduced Gelao culture, food and language to the visitors who also learned traditional skills like paper-cutting and making their own bamboo balls.

"The principle of weaving seems easy, but the bamboo strips are quite hard, so it's difficult to control them like threading a needle," said Hong Kong student Rick Yeung.

Simon Ng from Hong Kong added, "The activity allows us to feel the Chinese cultural heritage and understand the importance of inheriting and developing the national culture, which is an unforgettable journey." Enditem
