XI'AN, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Hucho taimen, a rare fish species under first-class national protection, has been found in tributaries of the Yangtze River in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the provincial agriculture and rural affairs department said on Thursday.

Since the implementation of the 10-year fishing ban in the Yangtze River Basin, a 478-km protection network has been established along the tributaries of the Yangtze River in the province to provide comprehensive protection for the recovery of aquatic animal populations, said Zhao Yi, an official with the department.

"The monitoring results of aquatic biological resources show that at present, the types of aquatic organisms in the Hanjiang River, Jialing River, and Danjiang River basins have increased. In 2023, 15 more fish species were monitored in those tributaries of the Yangtze River compared with 2022. Since 2021, several Hucho taimen populations have been observed multiple times," Zhao added.

In the past three years, more than 20 million commercial fishes and more than 80,000 rare and endangered aquatic animals have been released in the Yangtze River tributaries in Shaanxi.

The province has also undertaken the restoration of key aquatic wildlife habitats in the Yangtze River basin. Enditem
