1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close lower Wednesday

BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.67 percent to 2,784.28 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.51 percent lower at 8,226.24 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 559.38 billion yuan (about 78.62 billion U.S. dollars), down from 580.6 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.

Shares related to the pharmaceutical business and solid-state battery sector led the gains, while the oil and gas exploitation sectors suffered major losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.11 percent to close at 1,554.64 points on Wednesday. Enditem
