BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese forward Zhang Yuning has expressed his gratefulness to the VAR intervention in China's dramatic 1-0 win over Bahrain in a FIFA World Cup qualifier, saying it could have saved the Chinese side's life.

Bahrain netted in the 87th minute of the match held last Thursday, only to see the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR check.

One minute into injury-time, Zhang scored from close range after meeting a cross from teammate Wang Haijian, capping off a roller-coaster ride for the Chinese side.

"It's a very dramatic game," Zhang said. "We were rather frustrated after conceding the goal. We had then fought for about 88 minutes, and I thought our trip to the West Asia this time would end up in huge regret."

"When we stood in the middle circle, waiting for the restart of the game, the referee was communicating with the VAR. Then it occurred to me that hopefully the goal could be overruled," he said.

"Then the referee made the decision (of disallowing the goal). At that time I felt as if having been saved by the bell," he added.

China, which climbed to the fourth place of the six-team Group C with the win over Bahrain, will face group leader Japan at home on Tuesday. Enditem
