URUMQI, China, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The inaugural Tianshan Tianchi International Ice Yacht Open opened on Friday in northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Tianchi Lake, located in the eastern part of the Tianshan Mountains, provides an ideal setting for the sport once the lake surface freezes over in winter.
The event attracted over 50 competitors, coaches from around the world, including athletes from Sweden, Germany and France.
"The environment here feels just like home, and I really enjoy competing in China. The scenery is beautiful, and I've also had the chance to experience the local customs and culture, which is very appealing," said Swedish competitor Stefan Bofor.
Unlike traditional sailing on water, ice sailing involves similar principles of wind power but is much easier to learn. With just a few hours of training, it is possible to operate the craft, making it accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
"It allows people to experience the thrill and speed of the sport in a winter wonderland," said Zhang Xiaodong, president of the Chinese Yachting Association, "We hope this event will help more people appreciate the natural beauty and cultural richness of Tianchi Lake, turning it into a must-visit destination for sailing enthusiasts and tourists alike."
