BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese procuratorates indicted over 67,000 individuals for telecom and cyber fraud from January to November 2024, up 58.5 percent year on year, according to a national chief prosecutors' meeting on Monday.
A total of 9,867 people involved in organized crime and 1,136 people who engaged in the abduction or trafficking of women and children were indicted during the period, as part of procuratorates' efforts to handle crimes of particular concern to the people.
A tough stance against severe, violent crime was taken last year, with 55,000 people involved in such crimes indicted by procuratorates over the 11-month period.
Stronger action was also taken against corruption, with more than 28,000 individuals suspected of duty-related crimes transferred from supervision commissions and handled during the period, up 37.9 percent from the same period of 2023. A total of 22,000 of those individuals had been indicted.
Procuratorates nationwide also indicted 2,772 people for offering bribes, a 20.2 percent year-on-year increase, aiming to ensure both offering and accepting bribes are punished, according to the meeting.
Procuratorates also showed zero tolerance toward crimes against or involving minors, indicting 67,000 people for crimes against minors and over 50,000 minors for serious crimes.
Procuratorates also handled a total of 3,856 public interest litigation cases related to the protection of cultural relics and heritage during the period, up 44 percent year on year, indicting 1,619 people for related crimes such as illegal excavation, theft, scalping, damaging or smuggling of cultural relics.
More than 121,000 individuals were indicted for crimes that disrupted the order of the socialist market economy, a rise of 18.7 percent from the 11-month period in 2023, according to the meeting. About 22,000 of that number were involved in financial fraud or disruption of the financial management order.
Attaching great importance to the protection of specific vulnerable groups, procuratorates last year also indicted 43,000 people for infringing upon the lawful rights and interests of women and 40,000 for infringing upon the rights and interests of elderly people, while providing 620 million yuan (86.25 million U.S. dollars) in judicial relief to 64,000 victims who faced difficulties as a result of these crimes.
