BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Friday said that China will continue to enhance international law enforcement cooperation and intensify efforts to combat cross-border crimes such as telecom fraud, online gambling and human trafficking.

Guo made the remarks at a daily news briefing when asked to comment on the recent surge of online gambling and telecom fraud cases along the Thailand-Myanmar border, in some of which Chinese nationals were involved.

Guo stressed that the Chinese government is determined to combat telecom and internet fraud, firmly crack down on cross-border crimes, and resolutely protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens.

"We also ask Chinese citizens overseas to strictly abide by local laws and regulations and refrain from engaging in any illegal and criminal activities," he said.

In a recent period of time, China has worked closely with relevant countries to bust a large number of transnational criminal syndicates, he said.

China will continue to deepen international law-enforcement cooperation and take tougher steps to combat cross-border illegal and criminal activities including online gambling and telecom fraud and human trafficking, he said.

"We will continue to work in collaboration with competent authorities to guide our diplomatic missions to properly handle cases involving Chinese citizens overseas and provide necessary assistance to the individuals concerned and their families within our duty," he said. Enditem
