Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index closes 2.83 pct higher

HONG KONG, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Investors in Hong Kong's stock market greeted the second trading day of the Year of the Snake with much optimism, with the benchmark Hang Seng Index soaring 2.83 percent to close at 20,789.96 points.

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index jumped 3.51 percent to end at 7,643.63 points, while the Hang Seng Tech Index surged 5.06 percent to end at 4,977.38 points.

Paul Chan, financial secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, said at a ceremony on Monday that he is "cautiously optimistic" about Hong Kong's stock market in the Year of the Snake.

Stock exchanges on the Chinese mainland remained shut for the Chinese New Year holiday and will resume trading on Wednesday. Enditem
