URUMQI, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Strong winds reaching 40 meters per second struck an expressway section in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, overturning a truck and leaving people stranded at nearby service areas.
The expressway section connecting the regional capital Urumqi and the city of Turpan saw severe windy weather on Tuesday, hurling debris and reducing visibility to under 10 meters in some areas, according to the traffic police of Turpan.
Affected by the gales, a bus carrying 14 passengers lost control at around 5 p.m. Tuesday following window glass damage. Rescue efforts rushed to the scene and saved the stranded people. A heavy truck was also overturned. No casualties were reported.
As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, some 2,800 people and 2,000 vehicles were guided to nearby service areas and parking zones to shun the winds. Supplies including drinking water and instant noodles have been provided for the stranded people. Enditem
