Located in Huangpu District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, the Whampoa Military Academy was founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1924 with the help of the Communist Party of China and the former Soviet Union. The academy produced many prominent military commanders for both the Kuomintang and the CPC. It also witnessed the first cooperation between the two parties, with its alumni fighting in the Northern Expedition in 1926 to topple local warlords' control of north China and reunify the country.
