东弗吉尼亚医学院科学家桃乐斯·施潘根贝尔格博士希望知道未来人类在太空出现的引力效应。1991年6月，她首次将2478只小水母放置在“哥伦比亚号”航天飞机发射至太空，实验显示水母能够很好地适应太空环境，很快水母数量增加至6万只。
