据美媒《大西洋月刊》，日本南部海岸离岛青岛原有的渔村人口凋零，目前猫的数量为人类的6倍，成为名符其实的猫岛。青岛（Aoshima）长1.6公里，一开始是因为渔夫要对付渔船的鼠患，于是引进猫。结果猫在青岛上繁衍，数量不断增加。青岛有超过120只猫，仅剩少许居民，多半是退休老人，未在二次大战后加入离乡潮外移到城市工作。青岛也是日本十几个“猫岛”之一。
