Editor's note: Weifang in east China's Shandong Province is considered to be the birthplace of kites in China. It became known all over the world since 1984, when the First Weifang International Kites Festival was held. As an influential event held between April 20-25 each year, it always draws thousands of kite-lovers and visitors from both China and abroad. Kite-making in Weifang dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the technique is sophisticated and superb with designs covering a large variety – from birds and beasts, to flowers, cartoons and historical figures. As a traditional Chinese folk art with a long history, Weifang kites were included into the first group of national-level intangible cultural heritage lists by the State Council in 2006. In the following pictures, the kite works were made by local people and are representative of daily life.
