Editor's note: Wax printing, also known as batik, is a traditional Chinese handicraft with a history of more than 2,000 years. It is now mainly distributed in the areas inhabited by ethnic minorities in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Hunan provinces, each region featuring its own unique characteristic. Wax printing combines painting and dyeing, and uses clear lines, rich patterns and elegant designs. Wax-printed and tie-dyed products come in many forms, including scarves, clothes, bedclothes, bags, curtains and wall hangings, all displaying local characteristics. As a handicraft with high artistic value, it is appreciated both in China and abroad. The following pictures, taken in a wax printing factory in Dali, Yunnan Province, show the excellent skills of local craftspeople.
