This early career painting by Zhang Daqian shows his precocious painting skills. The plants delineated in the painting are mugwort, garlic heads and pomegranate flowers, which are able to repel five poisonous creatures – snakes, centipedes, scorpions, lizards and toads -- creatures that are unusually active during the fifth month of the lunar calendar, when the Dragon Boat Festival arrives.
