The 2017 National Postdoctoral Academic Forum opened in Hengqin New Area in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, on Dec. 19, with nearly 140 international experts, scholars and postdoctoral researchers in attendance to discuss the latest developments in artificial intelligence.
China has been striving to advance the development of artificial intelligence in recent years. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a three-year action plan for the development of the industry on Dec. 14.
To promote postdoctoral researchers’ participation in developing the AI sector, the forum is themed “The Future is Now: Embracing the 4th Wave of AI,” including sessions on industrial innovation and talent cultivation, with an aim to bridge the industry and academia.
Such academic events offer sites for postdoctoral talents to exchange ideas and improve innovation, said Qiu Chunlei, deputy director of the overseas students and experts service center, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and deputy secretary-general of China Postdoctoral Science Foundation.
He Dong, an official of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security, said that Hengqin New Area has hosted several postdoctoral events since its postdoctoral workstation was established two years ago and offered opportunities for postdoctoral personnel to exercise their talents.
He added that the integration of the internet, big data and AI with the real economy plays a key role in Guangdong’s industrial upgrading, and that the forum will promote the development of AI and related technologies.
Deng Lianbing, director of the Hengqin New Area’s postdoctoral administration, said that they aim to raise Hengqin’s profile nationwide by hosting such academic events.
The organizers of the forum, the National Postdoctoral Administration Committee Office and the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, also organized the Colloquium of Supporting Innovative Postdoctoral Talents on Dec. 19 as well as an event for the 45th Cohort of the China Postdoctoral Sci-Tech Service Corps from Dec. 20 to 21.
The postdoctoral events are hosted by the Hengqin New Area’s postdoctoral administration and Zhuhai Da Hengqin Technology Development Co. Ltd., with support from the Hengqin New Area administration, National Postdoctoral Administration Committee Office, China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, and Guangdong Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security.
Officials from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, National Postdoctoral Administration Committee Office, China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, Guangdong provincial government, Zhuhai municipal government and Hengqin New Area administration will be in attendance, along with representatives of international organizations and educational institutions.
