A Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway will be built during China's
"10th Five Year Plan" (2001-2005) period, with a total
investment of 100 billion yuan, a spokesman of the Ministry
of Railways said Friday, December 15.
Ren Xigui, spokesman
for the ministry, said at a press conference held by the State
Council's Information Office, that China will raise construction
funds for the railway through multiple channels and select
a suitable construction method.
Regarding the Tibet
railway project, the spokesman revealed that the ministry
recommended the building of a railway connecting Golmud, a
city in northwest Qinghai province, with Lhasa, as the best
choice.
Ren also disclosed
that the project of the China section of the Pan-Asia Railway
between Kunming and Singapore will be included in the "10th
Five-Year Plan".
