Scientific and agricultural administrations are encouraging
enterprises to put funds into developing agro-technology for
the long-term mutual benefit of both sectors, according to a
senior science official .
Linking enterprises with agro-research institutes will be a
vital step in raising the level of investment in agricultural
production during the 10th Five-Year Plan (2001-2005).
Vice-Minister of Science and Technology Deng Nan made this remark
at a conference held in Beijing to encourage enterprises to
do their bit for agricultural development.
More enterprises are injecting funds into agro-research institutes
to develop new farming skills and equipment. They can reach
agreement on sharing the profits gained after the commercialization
of new technology, according to sources from the ministry's
Department for Rural and Social Development.
Deng said her ministry and the Ministry of Agriculture will
select a group of enterprises to set up processing centers in
major agricultural provinces to upgrade the quality of rice,
maize, soybeans, apples, oranges and other key farm produce.
Relevant departments will draw up policies to support enterprises
participating in agro-technology development, she said.
The government will give financial support to enterprise-funded
projects with promising market potential and good profits, she
added.
Motivating more than 200 million households in rural areas and
22 million township enterprises to upgrade technology will be
a key method of boosting agricultural production, said Guo Suutian,
former director of the Policy and Regulation Department of the
Ministry of Agriculture.
