Vice President of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Bid Committee
(BOBICO) Jiang Xiaoyu said in Hong Kong on May 22 that BOBICO will
discuss with the Olympic Committee of Chinese Taipei on the issue
of jointly hosting the 2008 Olympic Games as long as three conditions
are met.
He told a press conference Tuesday that the three conditions must
be met before Beijing and Taiwan can explore the prospect of jointly
hosting the Olympic games.
The first condition is that the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) chooses Beijing as the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games.
The second condition is that the IOC approves Beijing to put certain
Olympic events under the host of other cities. This is because the
IOC regulations stipulate that the Olympic Games have to be held
in one city of one country. The third condition is that both sides
recognize the "One China" principle.
Jiang said that though it is too early to consider the issue of
joint hosting of the Olympic Games by Beijing and Taipei, BOBICO
has already hosted a number of activities together with the Olympic
Committee of Chinese Taipei, such as an Olympic run attended by
people across the Taiwan Straits.
Jiang was in Hong Kong to attend a large-scale dinner party that
all sectors of Hong Kong jointly held to support Beijing's bid to
host the Olympic Games.
