The subscribers of ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) in
Beijing surpassed 100,000 by November 24, said Beijing Telecom,
an arm of China Telecom.
In October alone, the installation of ISDN or conversion of traditional
telephone lines reached average 256 per day, the company said.
ISDN allows high quality data and voice transmission over a digital
telephone line using an ISDN adapter. It normally transmits data
at 64Kbps or 128Kbps -- much faster than a normal 56Kbps modem.
It enable users to surf the Internet as well as making phone calls
at the same time.
The current monthly basic charge for ISDN services in Beijing is
32.4 yuan (US$3.72).
ISDN services, launched in 1998 in Beijing, has received warm response.
Related sources said the number of ISDN users in Beijing will reach
6.3 million in 2004, representing a growth of 84 percent on a year-on-year
basis.
