A Musical Feast

Striving to continue the success of the previous six Davidoff Friendship Tours, the China Philharmonic Orchestra will start this year's world tour this month.

Conducted by Justus Frantz, the orchestra will give a concert at the Shanghai Grand Theatre on May 29.

The orchestra is a multi-cultural philharmonic, founded by Justus Frantz in 1995, and is made up of highly talented young musicians from over 40 countries.

A springboard for young musicians in many ways, the orchestra does not have a permanent location - its home is in the music.

It has already performed over 1,000 concerts around the world.

In 1996, the orchestra accompanied the German president on a state visit to China to provide the official cultural program.

Along with many other performances at festivals, the annual Davidoff Friendship Tour is now part of the orchestra's standard program.

Since 1998, the China Philharmonic Orchestra has been the official orchestra for the Operalia, the choral competition organized by star tenor Placido Domingo.

Other musical highlights have included a performance to mark United Nations Day on October 23, 1998 at the invitation of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at the United Nations in New York.

This time they will perform prelude to "Lenore" by Beethoven and Brahms' "2nd Symphony in D Major."

Three Chinese members in the orchestra will perform at the show - percussionist Biao Li, cellist Ling Huang and viola player Wang Yang
