Shanghai Speeds Up Software Exports

Shanghai, east China's commercial and financial center plans to export 100 million US dollars-worth of software this year, according to Vice-Mayor Jiang Yiren.

Statistics show that Shanghai exported more than 40 million US dollars-worth of software in the first half of this year.

Over the past few years, Shanghai's software industry has witnessed an average annual output increase of about 30 percent.

By 2005, the total turnover in this sector is expected to reach 30 billion yuan-worth, and the total exports, some 500-600 million US dollars-worth.

Jiang said that, owing to the present stagnation in the world information technology industry, most software producers in developed countries are seeking contractors in other countries.

This has provided an unprecedented opportunity for Shanghai, which abounds in skilled but low-priced professionals, he said.
