Xie Jianzhuo, former deputy director of the General Affairs Office of Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province, was sentenced to death on December 22, for embezzling public funds totaling 15.3 million yuan and HK$4.6 million.
The Intermediate People's Court of Jiangmen City meted out the death penalty, and also decided to deprive Xie his political rights for life and confiscate all his personal property.
In May of 1993, Xie, who served as the general manager of the Yuexiong Industrial Development Company, embezzled 8.3 million yuan by selling illegally the ownership of a booth in a commercial mansion.
In October of 1995, he embezzled the stock ownership of a plot worth 6.24 million yuan.
In early 1993, he illegally pawned a car of his company to a pawnshop and embezzled 600,000 yuan.
In May of 1996, Xie embezzled HK$3 million from the sale of 60 apartments of the Duobao Garden to a Marco businessman by the name of Ruan.
Investigations show that Xie spent the bulk of his embezzled money in gambling in Macao.
