Authorities in Beijing disclosed Tuesday that during the past six years, China's prosecuting agencies at all levels have probed more than 270,000 embezzlement and bribery cases, handing punishment to 10,000-odd officials above county or department's division level.
Among them, 700 are prefecture or department level administrators while a dozen are provincial or ministerial powers, the authorities said.
The unearthed 60,000 major corruption cases have burrowed 22.9 billion yuan (US$2.77 billion) out of them and were sent to state coffers.
The most eye-catching cases include sentences on Chen Xitong, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Beijing vice-mayor Wang Baosen, deputy Chinese top-legislator Cheng Kejie and Hu Changqing, a Jiangxi vice-governor.
