Chinese President Jiang Zemin sent a message of congratulations Friday to Xiamen University on the occasion of its 80th founding anniversary.
In the message, Jiang said that the university has made important contributions to China's cause of higher learning.
Jiang said that he hoped that the university would continue to implement the policy of revitalizing the country by promoting science and education, and cultivate more talented people.
Xiamen University was set up in 1921 by Chen Jiageng, a Chinese entrepreneur living in Singapore. It was the first one in China established by an overseas Chinese.
Located in the coastal Fujian Province on the western side of the Taiwan Straits, the university has been carrying out frequent exchanges with educational institutions in Taiwan.
