Former Mayor Under Investigation for Alleged Corruption

Chen Wenxian, former mayor of Wenzhou and a Communist Party official in Zhejiang Province, east China is now under investigation for alleged corruption, sources said Tuesday.

The information was disclosed by sources from the Discipline Inspection Commission of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

Chen was also former board director of the Zhejiang Provincial International Trust and Investment Group Co., a company owned by the provincial government.

The sources said Chen was found to have abused his power for personal gain and accepted extremely large sums of money and expensive gifts when he was a local leader in Wenzhou and general manager of the Zhejiang Provincial International Trust and Investment Co.

Chen was also found to have been responsible for poor investment decisions that resulted in heavy losses of state assets, said the sources.
