Chinese President Jiang Zemin met here Sunday afternoon with Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
Jiang said he was satisfied with the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle in Hong Kong since Hong Kong's return to the motherland five years ago.
He said the Central Government will always give full support and assistance to Hong Kong to maintain Hong Kong's prosperity and stability in accordance with the principle.
He encouraged Tung and the second-term government of the HKSAR to make further efforts to do an even better job.
Tung was grateful for Jiang's concern for Hong Kong and his solicitude for Hong Kong people, and said he is confident in leading the HKSAR government and Hong Kong people to meet challenges ahead and open up a new prospect of economic development.
Vice-Premier Qian Qichen, Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee Wang Gang and Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council Liao Hui were also present at the meeting.
