Shanghai Mayor Vows to Implement Central Macro-control Policies
Adjust font size:

Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said Monday the municipal government will earnestly implement the central government's polices on macro-control, especially those on energy saving, arable land protection, and production capacity improvement.

The acting Communist Party chief of Shanghai made the remarks while discussing the government work report delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao at the full session of the Tenth National People's Congress (NPC) together with the NPC deputies from Shanghai.

"Last year was unusual to Shanghai. The important reason why Shanghai gained good momentum in economic and social development was that it had resolutely carried out the macro-economic control policies of the central government," said Han.

"The premier is very frank about the problems and shortcomings in government work, which sets a good example to governments at all levels," Han said.

Shanghai, the country's economic hub, has planned to make breakthroughs in economic growth pattern, technological renovation, improvement in international competition, and the building of a harmonious society, said Han.

Shanghai has set its target of GDP growth in 2007 at above nine percent, the lowest goal in 15 years, to aim for more balanced and sustainable economic and social development, the mayor said in his government work report to the municipal parliament in January.

Shanghai's economy has maintained two-digit growth rates for 15consecutive years. Last year, its GDP totaled 1.03 trillion yuan (US$132 billion), up 12 percent from 2005.
