China made great progress in searching emergency groundwater over the past year, bringing new hope for the alleviation of the domestic water shortage.
According to the 2001 Communiqué for China's Land and Resources promulgated by the Ministry of Land and Resources, the Huairou County in the suburb of Beijing has been verified to have an emergency water capacity of 120 million cubic meters, which will effectively guarantee the water using in Beijing.
The Communiqué said that the karstic water around the Erdos Basin in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has reached 1.4 billion cubic meters regarding the recharge capacity and already formed over 460 wells in local areas, where both people and animals are badly in need of water.
In addition, China has also intensified the geological survey in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and discovered some significant structural belts, ancient fossils and prospecting clues, which will help to promote the research on the plateau's evolution, stratum distributions as well as water resources utilization.
