Tianjin Port Sees Major Rise in Foreign Trade
Tianjin, the largest port city in north China, registered US$10.07 billion worth of foreign trade in the first quarter of the year, up 34.6 percent from the same period last year.

According to local customs statistics, imports made up 4.45 billion US dollars, and exports made up 5.62 billion US dollars, up 35.1 percent and 34.1 percent respectively.

Because of the US-led war on Iraq, foreign trade between Tianjin and countries in the Middle East plunged from January to March, said the customs sources.

In the quarter, exports to Iraq fell by 57.5 percent to hit 3.74 million US dollars and there were no imports from Iraq, while exports to Saudi Arabia fell by 32.4 percent to 22.51 million US dollars, and imports dropped by 5.8 percent to 16.83 million US dollars.

Imports and exports via general trade at Tianjin Port made up 5.7 billion US dollars, up 35.9 percent or accounting for 56.6 percent of the foreign trade volume, and imports and exports via the processing trade made up 2.76 billion US dollars, up 18.5 percent or accounting for 27.4 percent of the foreign trade volume.

The main trading partners of Tianjin Port are Japan, the United States and the Republic of Korea, and port's trade volumes with the three countries in the first quarter were two billion US dollars, 1.56 billion US dollars, and 1.47 billion US dollars, up 42.7 percent, 24.9 percent and 48.3 percent respectively.
