Shanghai harbor now ranks as the third largest container terminal in the world. The port's handling capacity has increased by thirty percent in the past year. 
 
More than eleven million containers passed through the harbor in 2003.

The Chinese government plans to invest seven billion yuan, or US$840 million, between 2001 and 2005 in improving and expanding Shanghai harbor.
