Five people were confirmed killed in a goods yard blast in Shantou, a coastal city in south China's Guangdong Province, the police said yesterday.

Another three people were injured as the fire triggered an explosion at about 4 AM when workers were loading a container truck, and the injured have been rushed to hospital.

Investigation into the cause is underway.
