Six people died after a sedan plunged into a pond in Hechi City in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Friday, police said on Saturday.

The car carrying six people ran off the road and plunged into a3.5 m deep pond in Dayang Village, about 230 kilometers to the northwest of the regional capital Nanning, at about 1:00 p.m., according to the police.

The bodies of the six victims -- five men and one woman, including the driver -- have been retrieved. The submerged car has also been hoisted from the pond.

The car was traveling on No. 210 national highway when the accident occurred, the police said.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
