Toddler in mid-flight lung scare
Adjust font size:

A two-year-old girl was fighting for her life yesterday after suffering a severe lung infection en route from New Delhi to Shanghai.

When the toddler collapsed mid flight on Saturday, airline authorities alerted Pudong International Airport and an emergency medical team was quickly dispatched.

When the plane landed, the girl and her parents were rushed to hospital.

The girl is identified as Grover Gurkirit. Both her parents are Indian, and she is a Canadian national.

The toddler, crouching in her parents' arm, was suffering a high fever and showing the whites of her eyes when she was examined by airport paramedics.

"The medical crew said she must be sent to hospital immediately after the examination," said Liu Yunye, an airport immigration officer.

Xia Lin, an official with Shanghai Children's Medical Center, said yesterday the girl had been treated in the intensive care unit since Saturday and her condition was not improving.

"After a full examination, doctors believe she might be suffering from a certain blood disease," she said.
