Shanghai Plans 1st Railway in New Pudong Area
Shanghai plans to build a 113-km railway line in its booming district of Pudong by 2005, local officials announced at the weekend.

Under the plan, the railway, the first of its kind in the district, will cost an estimated 5 billion yuan (US$600 million) with a handling capacity of one million standard containers each year.

The investment will involve funding support from the Ministry of Railways, said the officials.

The railway project will be launched as the Yangshan port project is initiated.

The Yangshan port was designed as a major deepwater port for Shanghai, which is aiming to be an international shipping center.
