Two men were sentenced to death by Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People's Court yesterday for murdering a police officer on February 8 in the city's Pudong New Area.
Han Guitao and Liu Guixi attacked two policemen, one of whom died with the other seriously injured.
Han's brother Han Guichen was sentenced to life imprisonment for being an accomplice to the murder.
The attack happened on the afternoon of February 8 when two policemen rushed to Liu's rented flat after receiving a call that prostitutes were operating there.
While helping the prostitutes escape, Han Guitao and Liu assaulted the two policemen with a brick and a fruit knife, leaving them seriously injured.
Policeman Chen Weiguo, 45, died the following morning while 49-old-year policeman Ji Xinkai is still confined to his sickbed.
The two Han brothers and Liu were all farmers from Northeast China's Jilin Province who moved to Shanghai to look for work.
Those convicted all admitted their crimes but still have the right to appeal to a higher-level court within 10 days of yesterday's first verdict.
Shanghai police officers do not usually carry guns unless they are working on a violent case.
As a result of this month's murder, it has been decided to arm at all times while they are on duty.
