Submarine Accident Killed 70 Crew Members
Seventy Chinese Navy sailors aboard a conventionally powered Navy submarine have been killed in an accident in the water area east of Neichangshan.

Jiang Zemin, chairman of the Central Military Commission, has sent condolence messages, dated May 2, to family members of the dead Navy officers and seamen.

The No. 361 submarine was taking part in a drilling east of Neichangshan Islands, when mechanical problems caused the accident, said Navy sources.

The submarine has been towed back to the port base.
