Beijing is planning to renovate 3,000 public toilets. The toilets are mainly located in the ancient city's back alleys, known as hutongs, and many of them, built half a century ago, are not up to standard as far as hygiene is concerned, according to "Beijing Daily".
Another daily, "Global Times" also quoted Beijing Tourism Bureau Director Yu Changjiang as saying that the city will speed up the renovation program to welcome the 2008 Olympic Games. Yu, who was attending a world toilet summit in Singapore, said that Beijing will invest 240 million (about 30 million U.S. dollars) to renovate 747 toilets in scenic spots. Tourists have repeatedly complained about Beijing's public toilets.
