China's environmental authorities are planning a series of educational campaigns over the next two months with the aim of enhancing public awareness of the importance of environmental protection.
A week of various activities to be held around World Environment Day, which falls on June 5, will highlight China's environmental problems and its efforts to tackle these problems while also maintaining sustainable development, according to the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA).
Environmental protection in China is a difficult task since pollution is still a major problem and the deterioration of the ecological system has not been brought under control, said Xie Zhenhua, director of the SEPA.
"All society should be made aware that because of rapid industrialization and urbanization environmental conservation will be a long and complicated task in China," he said.
Organizers of the activities in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, plan to raise the alarm about the environmental deterioration by stage performances, forums, exhibitions, and the broadcast of television documentaries, he said.
