HK to Attend WCO Meeting

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will send a customs delegation to Baku, Azerbaijan, to attend the 44th Session of the Policy Commission of the World Customs Organization (WCO) to be held from December 5 to 8, the Hong Kong government announced Sunday, December 3.

Hong Kong has been a member of the WCO since July 1987. At the WCO Council Session held in July this year, Hong Kong, China, was elected the WCO vice-chairman representing the Asia Pacific region.

The 44th Session of Policy Commission will examine the structuring of the WCO with a view to enhancing its strategic capacity, review the Environmental Scanning Exercise which aims to draw up strategic directions for all customs administrations to meet new challenges and review the Customs Reform and Modernization Program.

The session will also discuss the WCO's preparations for the Second Global Forum on Fighting Corruption, to be held at The Hague in 2001, and make recommendations on the Program Budget of the WCO for financial year 2001 to 2002.

After the conclusion of the commission session, the Hong Kong customs delegation will visit the Customs Administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Tehran between December 10 and 12.
